Burda Style For people who sew

We used Guipure lace (also known as Filet lace, according to Wikipedia) for the inset of Gail, our BurdaStyle variation of the Malissa. This heavy, loosely weaved lace requires special methods for finishing. If you are adventurous and ambitious enough to giveGuipure a try, this How To is a must. However, even if you are using a more traditional type of lace, still give this How To a look, as the methods are still applicable. Here, I am just demonstrating on the neckline. If you are following this to make the Gail dress, start with casing the neckline, then apply your buttonloops, then do the center backs (after applying buttonloops), then the armholes.

  Your work is pretty and this lace is a good choice but, I’m sorry … it cannot be called a Filet Lace Guipure.
  
  In the family of Filet Lace there are the Filet Work and the Embroidery on Knotted Net (generally we all use the words FILET LACE).

  FILET WORK is a KNOTTED LACE.
  It is done with a shuttle (or netting needle)and the gauges are used to measure the size of the holes (meshes). Each mesh has a small knot on the 4 corners. It is made like a fishing net but with smaller holes and smaller thread. By using different sizes of gauges you can make a pretty lace.

  FILET LACE is a hand made EMBROIDERY ON A KNOTTED NET.
  Different techniques of embroidery can be made on this net. Depending on the stitch and the thread used, the finished piece takes different names.

  For example, the Filet Italien is generally made in Linen Stitch. The Filet Guipure is made of different stitches of embroidery over the knotted net and the work in Linen Stitch. There are many other pretty techniques to explore.

  The lovely lace used for this collar is a machine made guipure lace. It cannot be called a Filet Lace because it is not done on a knotted Net.

  This pattern is a lovely application for a FILET LACE!
