Today, we demystify the jacket’s structural shoulder guts. Using the proper foundations in a jacket gives your garment punch and professionalism; without proper shoulder structure, a jacket may just look like a shirt. Here, we show you how to apply a shoulder heading and shoulder. The heading smoothens the seam allowance, preventing a ridge at the top of the sleeve. Shoulder pads give shape and body.
A jacket project, a shoulder heading, a shoulder pad. If you don’t have a store-bought shoulder heading, you can make one out of self fabric. They are a gentle C-shape, about 1 ½” wide. Shoulder pads can also be self-made; see our How To How To.
