I’ve wanted to try making a Steampunk costume for a long time, and when I saw a particular pair of boots in a catalog, I had my inspiration. I found the white, flouncy blouse and conductor’s hat at Target, the black corset vest at Hot Topic, and the boots at Naturalizer.com. I made the bolero jacket out of brown/mulit-colored brocade fabric using Simplicity pattern #2478. I added two gold vintage buttons and a small decorative gold chain to each sleeve cuff of the jacket.The pirate pants and bustle both came from Simplicity pattern #3677. The pants were made from brown costume suedecloth with elastic in the waist and in the hems of each pant leg, and the bustle was made of brown brocade fabric. I sewed black grosgrain ribbons to the bottom of the corset vest and along the top of the bustle, which allowed me to tie the bustle to the vest. I also wove brown velvet ribbons through the rings on the sides of the vest to complete the look. To make my goggles look “vintage”, I used a metallic gold paint marker around the edge and wiped it off with a napkin. I borrowed my husband’s pocket-watch, and I wore an old brooch that had been made from a watch case. I was very happy with the way the entire costume came together.
