Description

As you can see in the photo of the muslin he top was too big but the bottom fit quite well except for being a little too long, i had cut out a Burda size 36. I fixed the problems by cutting out a size 34 for the torso and keeping the skirt as a size 36. I also reduced the length of the torso by about 5cm which solved the bagginess at the back and also lifted the waistband to underneath the bust. I shortened the skirt pattern pieces to knee length before cutting and it turned out just right.

The dress is fully lined with a rayon lining, has an invisible zipper in the side seam and i left off the button at the front.
I’m really pleased with how it has turned out, i’m considering another with a more colourful fabric for the summer. I may also make a few more alterations, in particular the collar, although maybe it just needs a stiffer interfacing than what i used.

I wore the dress to the Tessuti Awards night in the Melbourne store and received many compliments which made my night! I even got to wear heels and lipstick! I felt very frown up, oh wait i AM grown up! Maybe i should do this more often!! It also works well with tights and boots for daytime.

In conclusion i’d like to say i’m very glad i made a muslin before cutting into the ‘good stuff’, i highly recommend you do the same with any pattern. I’m also glad i took the time to line the dress, it is so worth it!

Material Notes

I used a black cotton which has some elastane in it and a white eyelet fabric (thanks to the suggestion of two RMIT teachers who happened to be in the store the day i was choosing) as the contrast, both are from Tessuti (of course). The only downside is the black picks up fluff like a magnet, my husband doesn't mind this because he gets to de-fluff my butt with the lint roller ;)

It looked great up close too – I’m a regular Tesuti customer and got a glimps of this in the flesh. Its a lovely dress, but my bust is just too big for this, and I would just buldge. I could alter the bodice, but I just don’t think this cut will suit me. It is lovely on you though.

Looks great…. I love it!! Its great that you noted how you adjusted the sizing and yes I can see why it is sooo important to do a test before the final masterpiece!!! Can I just ask… as I am yet to make anything from Burdastyle due to lack of time mainly, but also I’m not sure about the sizing.. what Aust size do you usually wear?

This looks really great! I love the black and white! Also, I liked your comment about your husband getting to “de-fluff” your butt with the lint roller – That’s funny. Lovely job.

Wow. I love the black and white contrast. The eyelet looks really nice. Good thing you chose to do a muslin first; the end result is a great fitting piece. =)

Thats great – i downloaded this and even chose fabric but was doubtful…seeing this has got me motivated again. Thanks for putting up the muslin too – I tend to get impatient and dive straight in but seeing what you did I will definately do a muslin first.

Wow! I really can’t wait to make this dress! It is high up on my list, i love all the details. Yours has turned out so well, the B&W looks excellent. Does the dress come with lining instructions or did you do that yourself? Thanks :)

Oh Nicci it’s simply fabulous! I love it. Great choice of fabrics and you did such a great job fitting it and overcoming all the problems, you definiltel deserved all those compliments. Thank you so much for your detailed description, it will help so many (and me!) in the future with this pattern.

Nice dress! Thanks for the useful description, I would probably have to do similar changes, because I have small shoulders compared to the hips and waist.
