Perhaps you’ve heard the saying “A garment should look as beautiful on the inside as the outside.” We like that idea, and, similarly, we think you should look as stylish at night as you do during the day. The pattern for this nightie will make you look fabulous while dreaming away. The sweet flutter wings, which we chose to make out of coordinating chiffon, add some romance. For the tomboys out there, skip the wings and make a simple clean nightie with spaghetti straps instead.

Love love love this dress for summer. Too sexy to use as a nightie… why sleep in it where no one will see when I can wear all about and show it off to the world. This goes perfect with bangs :-)

I love this nightie but I can’t seem to get hte link to download it – has it been discontinued? (please say no!)
Could anyone point me in the direction of a link so I could get stuck into my next project?
Thanks!

Ok I just got around to reading all the comments here, this has been waiting for me since the day it came out….I am (very quickly!) turning 41 and I LOVE this nightie. Name and all, Bambi might have been a boy, and all that, but who cares what the name is, it is a gorgeous creation, and once you make it you can call it whatever you want. I will be stitching this one up in the morning and if I like it as much on me as I do in the pics, I will probably be making ones for the daughters (21+20) soon after. Thank You Burda Style!!!

I finished this last week in size 44, and I’d love to post a pic in My Creations, however, I am waiting to acquire a mannequin or dress form because my stretch marks aren’t fit for the light of day or the web. Silk is a bit out of my budget right now, so I used scraps of fabrics I thought would work for the garment that were left over from other projects, some satin for the cap sleeves, a synthetic sheer knit for the bust, wings, and back skirt, with a sheer polyester single-weave fabric for the front skirt, and the back where you apply the elastic, I used a cotton weave since I thought I would need something a bit sturdier to stand up to all those stitches.
Two tips I want to share with members who attempt Bambi:
First, it will be easier to fit and give you a better fit if you don’t mix a stretch knit bust with woven fabric for the back piece. The bust pattern is definitely shaped for a woven fabric and it probably would be better to be significantly altered if a knit is used. The next Bambi I make, I am going to try to make completely from a knit, probably t-shirt jersey.
Second, use the thinnest elastic you can find that will support the fabric. I used elastic I had on hand that was about 1/4 inch wide and it is much too heavy for the cotton, let alone the sheer knit I chose for the bust. The elastic serves as a counterweight for the bust, so I had to rig my final version up by pulling the straps up higher, which of course doesn’t work out as well as it would have had I used a thin elastic from the start.
Maybe it’s just me, but I felt that the instructions for setting the elastic were unclear. I got the part about making the casings, but since there were no specifications given for the original length of the elastic strips, I made them 12 inches long. Instead of pulling the elastic strips to 8 inches, which I figured out finally is what you are supposed to do, and sewing down 8 inches, I put in gathering stitches at the top and bottom, pulled those stitches and them tried to sew down the bunched up strips of elastic, which did not work with either a zig-zag or straight stitch, shaking my head and trying to figure out where I went wrong. Only after looking very closely at the sample on the model did I finally figure it out. Do yourself a favor and study those images before you begin to set your elastic, because that will really help.

Hiya everybody.
‘Bambi’ is also the name of a German awards show produced by our parent company. It’s super glamorous, like the Oscars in the US. (You can read the Wiki here.) Nora and Benedikta are on their way there, and we’ve been working hard getting their gowns ready… That’s why we named the nightie ‘Bambi’!

I’m definitely not a tomboy (as the description suggests), but I’m not a big fan of those wings. However, the plain version is a classic — very pretty.

I think I understand what sOmmer is saying about Bambi being a sexist name for this garment. The name implies a doe-eyed submissiveness which, combined with the soft feminine styling of the nightie, suggests that women are sex objects. This is what many women have fought tooth and nail for years to overcome. I’m 38 so maybe it is a thirty-something thing, lol.
Personally, I love the nightie and I am definitely going to make one for myself. My fiancee will love it too – for reasons that feminists would find entirely objectionable.

Wow – I’m not a nightie fan but this is very glamorous.
Also, for what it is worth, Bambi was/is a boy deer…

Bambi ? sexist ? Well of course it is ! It’s a WOMAN’s nightie!
It’s darling ! I’d make one but my husband would just ask me to toss it on the floor then comment on how nice it looks there and proceed to attack LOL.

Very nice! :-)
Nov 25, 2008, 01.43 PMby s0mmer
Seriously though, Bambi? You couldn’t think of anything more sexist to call this?
A knowledge of, and respect for, the past would be appreciated especially by this 30-something sewer.

And I might do it as a summer top.

Is this a variation of Tara?
I don’t like the sleeves but the sleeveless variation is nice. Maybe I make one next summer.

Silly me, at first glance I thought this was a pretty dress. I might try to shorten it into a shirt and add some panels to back so I can wear to work.
